How do I stop drywall customers from canceling at the last minute?

Process: Cancellations and no-shows. Trade: Drywall contractor. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerAgree on a phase-by-phase schedule in writing, take a deposit that covers ordered board and compound, and confirm site readiness before each phase. Drywall is hang, tape, coat and sand with drying time between steps, so one cancelled phase pushes every later date, not only the visit itself.

The explanation

A drywall job is a sequence, not a single visit. If the hang day is cancelled, the taping crew and the finish crew move with it. That chain is why a casual cancel costs more here than for a one-visit trade, and why the schedule should be shown to the customer as a set of linked dates.

Many cancels originate upstream. A general contractor's electrical or insulation inspection slips and the drywall start is no longer ready. Build a readiness check into the confirmation: ask whether inspections have passed and the space is clear. A no answer lets you move the date before the crew is on the road.

Board and compound are ordered per job. A deposit that covers materials means a cancellation does not leave you holding a delivery, and it gives the customer a reason to protect the date.

In drywall contractor

Drywall crews move through hang, tape, coat and sand, with drying time between coats. A cancelled phase shifts the following phases and sometimes the paint crew, so linked dates and a materials deposit matter. All drywall contractor scheduling questions.
