How do I stop dog grooming customers from ghosting appointments?

Process: Cancellations and no-shows. Trade: Dog groomer. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerAsk new clients for a deposit, request a reply to the day-before reminder, and state a late pickup fee at booking. Groomers are ghosted at both ends of a visit: the owner who never arrives, and the owner who never returns to collect a finished dog while the next appointment waits.

The explanation

A missed grooming appointment leaves a table empty for hours, so new clients, who have no history with you, are the highest risk. A small deposit credited to the groom gives them a reason to turn up. Regulars with a clean record can skip it.

The pickup end is less obvious and just as disruptive. A finished dog waiting in a crate takes up space and attention, and the groomer cannot start the next dog with the first one still on site. A pickup window stated at drop-off, plus a clear late fee after a grace period, keeps the day moving.

Reminders tie both ends together. The day-before message should include the arrival time, the estimated pickup time and the vaccination reminder, and ask for a one-word reply. A silent reply earns a phone call.

Steps

  1. Collect a deposit from new clients and credit it toward the groom.
  2. Send a day-before reminder with drop-off and pickup times and request a reply.
  3. State the late pickup fee and grace period at booking.
  4. Call any owner who has not replied and offer the slot to the waitlist if needed.

In dog groomer

Groomers lose both table time to no-shows and crate space to late pickups. Because most clients return every few weeks, a new-client deposit and a clear pickup rule address the two points where ghosting appears. All dog groomer scheduling questions.
