Overbooking: what it means
DefinitionOverbooking is accepting more appointments or jobs than the schedule can comfortably hold. Some businesses do it on purpose, expecting a few cancellations to open room. Done by accident, it produces rushed visits, late arrivals and angry customers who were promised a time that could not be kept.
How it works in a service business
Airlines overbook because empty seats cost money and no-shows are common. A service business can borrow the idea carefully, such as taking one extra short job when no-show history is high. The tradeoff is simple: if everyone shows up, someone gets bumped or rushed. Overbooking suits short, flexible work and fails for long jobs with fixed access. A common mistake is overbooking by accident because the public booking page was never given a limit. Know the difference between a deliberate cushion with a plan for what happens when everyone arrives, and an unlimited calendar that quietly lets the day exceed what the crew can do.
Example
A groomer with frequent no-shows allows one extra short bath on Saturdays, and has a written rule to offer a discount or the next open day if everyone shows.
