No-show: what it means
DefinitionA no-show is a customer who is not present, or does not give access, at a scheduled appointment and has not canceled in advance. The business loses the booked time and often the drive to get there, so many owners track and limit no-shows with policy.
How it works in a service business
No-shows cost more in home services than in shops, because the crew has already driven to the address. Reminders reduce them, confirmation requests catch many before they happen, and deposits or cards on file add accountability. The tradeoff is friction: strict rules may deter new customers, while loose rules invite repeats. A common mistake is treating every missed visit alike. A first-time customer who forgot is different from one who has done it three times. Write a policy that defines how long the crew waits, what fee applies, and how repeat no-shows are handled. Record each occurrence on the customer's history so the pattern is visible when they try to book again.
Example
A tech waits fifteen minutes at a locked gate, calls twice, and marks the visit as a no-show. The customer history now shows it, and the next booking asks for a card.
