Dispatch: what it means
DefinitionDispatch is the act of assigning a job to a particular technician or crew and sending them to it at the right time. In a small business the owner often dispatches by phone or text. Larger shops use a dedicated dispatcher and software that shows who is free.
How it works in a service business
Dispatch answers three questions each morning: who goes where, in what order, and what do they need to know before arriving. Doing it well means knowing each person's skills, their truck stock, and how long the drive between stops really takes. The tradeoff is control versus speed. Letting software suggest assignments saves time but can ignore that one tech is the only one the customer trusts. Letting the owner decide every stop keeps judgment in the loop but makes the owner the bottleneck. A common mistake is changing assignments by text without updating the job record, which leaves the tech and the office working from two different plans.
Example
At seven each morning the owner of a pest control business sends the first tech to the three stops nearest his home, and keeps the afternoon open for same-day calls.
