Dispatch board: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: Dispatch and routing.

DefinitionA dispatch board is a screen that lays out each technician or crew as a row or column and shows their jobs across the day. The office uses it to see gaps and conflicts at a glance, drag a job to a new person, and fit in urgent calls without calling anyone first.

How it works in a service business

The board earns its keep on messy days. When a customer cancels at ten, the open hole is visible and the next unscheduled job can slide in. Color coding by status or crew helps a dispatcher read twenty jobs in seconds. The tradeoff is that a board only shows what has been entered. If crews take jobs by phone and skip the system, the board lies, and decisions made from a lying board are worse than none. Another limit is screen size. A board built for a big monitor can be hard to use from a phone in the truck. A common mistake is letting two people drag jobs at once without a rule about who owns changes.

Example

A cleaning company sees one crew with a two-hour gap on its board at noon. The dispatcher drags a waiting deep-clean request into that gap and the customer gets a message.
