Route optimization: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: Dispatch and routing.

DefinitionRoute optimization is the process of ordering a day's stops so the total driving distance or time is as small as practical. Software tries many sequences using addresses and map data. It works best when stops are fixed in place and worst when customers need specific times.

How it works in a service business

Driving is unpaid time, so trimming it matters most for lawn, pool, pest and cleaning routes with many short stops. The math is a version of the traveling salesman problem, and software gives a good answer fast, not always a perfect one. The tradeoff is that the shortest route is rarely the best route. A customer who needs a Tuesday morning visit, a gate that only opens at nine, or a dog that must be put away first all break the neat order. A common mistake is trusting the sequence blindly and not checking school zones or one-way streets. Treat the output as a draft and keep the final say.

Example

A lawn crew has eleven stops across town. After optimizing, the first stop moves to the far north side so the truck finishes next to the yard, saving a long empty drive home.
