What is dispatch software?

Process: Dispatch and routing. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerDispatch software assigns jobs to technicians or crews, puts each day in a workable order, and keeps the office and the field looking at the same plan. Good dispatch tools also show drive time, track job status as the crew taps it, and tell the customer when someone is on the way.

The explanation

The core of dispatch is a board: jobs on one side, people and trucks on the other. The dispatcher drags a job to a person, and the system checks the person is free, qualified and close enough. In a small shop the owner is the dispatcher and the board replaces a whiteboard and a stack of texts.

Around that board sit supporting pieces. A route view orders stops so the crew drives less. A status feed shows who is en route, on site or done. A customer message tells people when to expect the crew. Some tools suggest an assignment automatically, and others leave every choice to you.

A tool is worth the money when it removes calls and retyping. Ask what the crew sees on a phone, how a schedule change reaches them, and whether customer messages come from the same record. Test with a real week of jobs before you commit.

What to watch for

  • Boards that look good but show no drive time.
  • Crew apps that need a data connection to open the day.

How Apex does it

Rolling out

The screen and the rules are built and tested. Saving real customer data is not connected yet. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.

Apex is designed around a multi-technician board, daily route ordering, drive time between stops and tap-to-update job status for the crew. Route ordering and the status taps are built, and the drag-and-drop board is a demo screen.
