How to estimate junk removal jobs?
Short answerEstimate junk removal by how much of the truck the load will fill, then add labor time for carrying, disposal or dump fees for heavy or special items, and any access difficulty such as stairs. Photos from the customer let you size the pile before you drive out. Confirm on site before loading.
The explanation
Volume is the main driver. Know your truck's capacity, then judge the pile as a fraction of a load. Photos with a person or a door in frame give scale. A quarter load, half load or full load is easier to quote than cubic yards, and customers understand it.
Then look at what makes the job slower or costlier. Stairs, long carries, tight access and items that need to be broken down add labor. Heavy materials like concrete or roofing, and items like mattresses or appliances, can carry special disposal fees that vary by location.
Give a range from photos and a firm price on arrival. Explain what is included, such as sweeping, and what is not, such as hazardous material. State your minimum. If the pile turns out larger than the photos showed, explain it and offer the customer a choice before loading.
Steps
- Ask for photos with something in frame for scale.
- Judge the pile as a fraction of your truck.
- Add labor for stairs, long carries and disassembly.
- Add disposal fees for heavy or special items.
- Confirm the price on site before loading.
What to watch for
- Quoting from a photo and not confirming on site.
- Forgetting dump fees for heavy loads.
In junk removal
Junk removal is priced by load, and customers expect a number before the truck arrives. Dump rules and fees depend on location, so keep current local rates in your estimate sheet. All junk removal scheduling questions.
