Quote: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: Quotes and estimates.

DefinitionA quote is a price offered for clearly defined work that the business agrees to honor if the customer accepts within a stated period. Where an estimate predicts, a quote commits, so it should spell out the scope, the price, what is excluded and when it expires.

How it works in a service business

Quotes suit work that can be measured in advance: a standard cleaning, a fence of known length, a repeating lawn visit. Because the price is fixed, the business carries the risk of overruns, so the scope needs to be precise. The tradeoff is certainty versus margin: the customer loves a firm number, but a badly scoped quote can lose money. A common mistake is skipping the expiry date, which leaves an old low price hanging around after costs rise. Another is leaving out exclusions, such as stairs, pets or extra rooms. Write what is included, what is not, how long the quote is good for, and how the customer accepts it.

Example

A window cleaner quotes a flat price for exterior glass on a two-story house, excluding the screens and the sunroom, and notes the quote is good for thirty days.
