Proposal: what it means
DefinitionA proposal is a fuller sales document than a simple quote, combining the scope of work, pricing, optional upgrades, photos, terms and a way for the customer to accept. Service businesses use proposals for larger or more consultative jobs, where the customer compares choices and wants details.
How it works in a service business
A one-line quote suits a routine cleaning, while a deck rebuild or a landscape redesign deserves a proposal. It lets you present good, better and best options, show before photos, explain the schedule and lay out payment terms. The tradeoff is effort: a polished proposal takes time to build, and a slow turnaround can lose the job to whoever sent a number first. A common mistake is sending a long document with no clear next step. End with one obvious action, such as approve online, and a response date. Templates by service type help, so each new proposal starts from a tested layout rather than a blank page.
Example
After a site visit, a fence company sends a proposal with two material choices, photos of the property line, a start window and a button to approve and pay the deposit.
