Estimate: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: Quotes and estimates.

DefinitionAn estimate is an approximate price given before work starts, based on what the business can see or has been told. It is understood to be a prediction, so the final bill may differ if the job turns out larger, smaller or more complicated than described.

How it works in a service business

Estimates fit work with unknowns, such as repairs behind walls or yard cleanups that depend on how overgrown things are. The customer gets a range or a figure to plan around, and the owner keeps room to adjust. The tradeoff is surprise: if the final bill lands far above the estimate, trust drops fast even when the extra work was real. A common mistake is giving a single number with no explanation of what could change it. State the assumptions, such as access, condition or materials, and say what triggers a revised price. If the job changes mid-visit, get approval for the new amount before doing the extra work, and record it in writing.

Example

A tree service estimates a removal as a range, noting that a hidden power line could add rigging time, and promises a call before any extra work begins.
