Walkthrough: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: Approvals and signatures.

DefinitionA walkthrough is a visit in which the business and the customer look over the property together, either before work to scope and price it, or after work to confirm it meets expectations. It replaces guessing with shared observation and reduces later disputes.

How it works in a service business

A pre-job walkthrough lets you see what photos miss: stairs, pets, stains, access, the real condition of a yard. That produces a better quote and sets expectations. A final walkthrough gives the customer a chance to point out anything missed while the crew is still there, which costs less than a return trip. The tradeoff is time, since walkthroughs add unpaid minutes and a stop on the schedule. A common mistake is skipping the final walkthrough on large jobs and learning about a problem in a review. Take photos during it, note agreed fixes on the work order, and ask the customer to confirm the result before you leave.

Example

Before quoting a move-out cleaning, the owner walks the apartment with the landlord, notes the oven and the carpet stains, and photographs both so the quote matches the actual condition.
