Before-and-after photos: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: On-site work and photos.

DefinitionBefore-and-after photos are pictures of a property taken when the crew arrives and again when the work is finished. They document the condition, show the result to the customer, and give the business evidence if someone later disputes what was done or what was already damaged.

How it works in a service business

The habit pays for itself the first time a customer claims a scratch or a missed spot. Photos taken at arrival show pre-existing damage; photos at completion show the finished work. The tradeoff is time and storage: taking six clear pictures at every stop adds minutes, and thousands of photos pile up. A common mistake is taking pictures but not attaching them to the job record, so nobody can find them later. Make photos part of the checklist, attach them to the work order, and name the areas consistently. Ask customers before using images in marketing, and avoid showing faces, house numbers or personal items. Decide how long you keep photos, and back them up.

Example

A pressure washing crew photographs a stained driveway on arrival and the cleaned result at finish. Both images attach to the job, and the customer sees them in the invoice message.
