My contractor software is too complicated, is there something simpler?
Short answerContractor software is too complicated when it is built for companies with a dozen project managers. A small remodeling contractor needs a list of active projects with stages, a record of change orders, a calendar of who is on which site, and a quick way to message the homeowner. Look for those and ignore anything more.
The explanation
Projects run for weeks, so the software should help you see where each one stands. A simple stage board with columns such as quoted, approved, in progress and punch list gives you that. If it also requires time tracking by cost code, you may be paying for something you will not use.
Change orders are where small contractors lose money. A change in scope should be written down, priced and approved before work starts. A tool that makes this a two-minute task protects your margin more than any dashboard.
When testing, run one real remodel through it from quote to final invoice, including a change order. Count how long each step takes. If your site lead can update a stage from a phone without help, the tool fits your size.
In general contractor
General contractors work in project stages with subcontractors, permits and change orders. Homeowners judge the job by communication, so a quick update on the next crew visit prevents most phone calls. All general contractor scheduling questions.
How Apex does it
In progress
Part of this is built. The rest is not. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.
Apex has change orders, multi-day jobs and projects, and project pipeline stages. All three are partly built or still rolling out, so verify each one against a real project before relying on it.
