Data export: what it means
DefinitionData export is the ability to download your own records, such as customers, addresses, jobs, invoices and notes, in a usable file like a spreadsheet. It lets an owner keep a backup, change software, or hand data to an accountant without asking permission.
How it works in a service business
Your customer list is among the most valuable assets the business owns, and it lives inside someone else's product. The tradeoff with leaving a system is whether you can take it with you. Some products export only a partial list, charge for the service, or give files that are hard to read. A common mistake is testing export only at the moment of leaving. Try it during the trial: download the customers and jobs, open the files, and check that addresses, phone numbers, notes and history are present. Ask whether exports are available at any time, in what formats, and whether they include attachments such as photos. Repeat the check yearly and keep the files somewhere safe.
Example
During a trial, an owner exports her customer list and past jobs to a spreadsheet, finds notes missing, and asks support before moving over any real work.
