API: what it means
DefinitionAn API, short for application programming interface, is a defined way for one program to request data from or send data to another. For a service owner it is what lets a scheduler, an accounting tool and a website exchange information without anyone retyping it.
How it works in a service business
Most owners never touch an API directly. They matter when a developer, an automation tool or a specialist connects your systems, such as pushing new bookings into a spreadsheet. The tradeoff is power against effort: an API can do almost anything, but only someone comfortable with code can use it directly. A common mistake is assuming that having an API means a connection already exists. It usually means the connection is possible. Ask whether the product has a documented API, which actions it allows, whether it limits request volume, and whether it needs a special plan. Keep access keys secret, and give each connection only the permissions it needs.
Example
A web developer uses the scheduler's API to copy each confirmed booking into the company's own dashboard, so the owner sees today's jobs on a wall screen.
