Data migration: what it means
DefinitionData migration is the process of moving your customers, job history, price lists and other records from an old system into a new one. Done well, work continues without rekeying thousands of entries, and the old records stay available for reference.
How it works in a service business
The easiest migrations move a clean customer list and recent history. The hard parts are inconsistent entries, duplicate customers, notes stuffed in the wrong fields, and attachments that do not travel. The tradeoff is completeness against time: moving everything faithfully takes longer than moving the essentials. A common mistake is cancelling the old account the day the new one opens. Keep both running side by side until you have compared totals, spot-checked customers and run a full week of real jobs. Clean duplicates first, and decide how much history you truly need. Ask whether the vendor offers import help, whether a trial can use sample data, and whether the old product lets you export everything in the first place.
Example
A cleaning company exports customers from its old tool, removes duplicates in a spreadsheet, imports them, and checks twenty random records against the old system before switching.
