What is route planning?

Process: Dispatch and routing. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerRoute planning is the earlier decision of which stops go to which crew on which day. Optimization comes after, ordering the stops inside each day. Doing the planning step well, by zone and by job length, removes more drive time than reordering a bad day.

The explanation

Think of planning as sorting and optimization as sequencing. Planning looks at the week: which neighborhoods each crew covers, how many hours of work fit in a day, and which customers need a specific day. Optimization looks at one day and orders the stops.

Zones are the usual tool. Assign each crew a part of town by day, and book new work into the matching day. A customer asking for Thursday in a zone you serve Tuesday either waits or costs a detour. That tradeoff is the planning decision.

Planning also covers capacity. Add up job durations plus drive time, and leave slack for the visit that runs long. A day planned to the minute has no room for the emergency that always arrives. Leave a gap and you can say yes to the urgent call without wrecking every appointment after it.

How Apex does it

In progress

Part of this is built. The rest is not. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.

Apex works toward scheduling by territory or zone, plus a daily route optimization and capacity planning. Territory scheduling is partly built, and the capacity planner is built as a screen only.

Apex Flow Scheduler is in early access. See how we label status.
