Is there an app for scheduling employees?
Short answerYes, and they come in two kinds. Shift schedulers set who works which hours, like a rota for a shop. Field service schedulers assign which technician goes to which customer address at what time. A crew business usually needs the second kind, with the first as a smaller piece inside it.
The explanation
A shift app answers who is working on Tuesday and when their break is. It handles availability, time off requests and swaps. It does not know where the customers are, so it cannot tell you that the 9 a.m. job is across town from the 10 a.m. one.
A field service scheduler answers who goes to the Smith house at nine and how long the job takes. It adds addresses, drive time, skills and job status. Many include working hours and time off so you do not send someone who is not in that day.
Before you choose, list what you actually fight with. If the pain is covering shifts and time off, a shift app is enough. If it is routing, customer windows and last-minute changes, you want a field scheduler. Ask for a trial with your real crew list and a real week, and check that employees can see their own schedule on a phone.
What to watch for
- Using a shift app and tracking customer jobs elsewhere.
- Schedules that employees cannot see on their phones.
How Apex does it

Part of this is built. The rest is not. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.
Apex is a field service scheduler for jobs, crews and customers. Technician hours and overrides are partly built, time off requests are a demo, and role-limited calendar views are built. The crew app installs from the browser.
