What is route optimization software?

Process: Dispatch and routing. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerRoute optimization software takes a list of stops, drive times and appointment rules, then returns a driving order that cuts miles and hours. Check three things before trusting one: how it handles fixed times, how often you can run it, and which map data it uses.

The explanation

The inputs are simple: stop addresses, how long each job takes, when the crew starts and ends, and any customer time windows. The output is an ordered list, often drawn on a map, that you can send to the crew or hand to a navigation app.

Products differ in how much they let you control. Jobber's help center says its settings-based optimization is built on Google maps and can run twice a day, and that routing from the schedule map works on anytime visits, not on visits locked to a time. [1] Those are the kind of limits to read before you buy.

Compare on rules, not on the demo. Ask whether you can set a start point, whether the order updates when an emergency call lands mid-day, and whether the software can reorder only part of the day. A tool that does only one clean demo route may not survive a real Tuesday.

What to watch for

  • Assuming every tool reorders fixed-time visits.
  • Skipping the question of how many times a day you can re-run it.

How Apex does it

Built, rolling out

Built. A real server path exists; only setup steps remain before customers can use it. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.

Apex includes a daily route optimization, offers best-fit windows based on route density, and can hand a route to a maps app. The best-fit window offers are built and still being rolled out.

  • SC05Route optimization (daily)(Built)
  • SC06Route density / best-fit window offers(Built, rolling out)
  • SC41Export route to Google/Apple Maps(Built)

Apex Flow Scheduler is in early access. See how we label status.
