What is vehicle dispatch software?
Short answerVehicle dispatch software assigns trucks and drivers to jobs, plans their routes and tracks where they are. Delivery, hauling and towing fleets rely on it. A service crew with two or three trucks often gets what it needs from a field scheduler that adds vehicle assignment and a map.
The explanation
The key question is whether the vehicle is the product or the tool. For a tow or delivery company, the vehicle is the service, so capacity, load and live location are central. For an HVAC or lawn crew, the truck carries the tech and the gear.
Vehicle-focused tools add things like load planning, driver hours, proof of delivery and fuel or maintenance tracking. Field service tools add customers, quotes, invoices and job notes. Few do both well, so decide which side your work leans on.
If you only need to know which truck is where and when it is due for service, you may not need a dedicated system. Assigning a vehicle to a crew, keeping maintenance reminders and viewing a map often cover it. Check what each tool tracks live and what it needs hardware for.
What to watch for
- Paying for fleet features you will not use.
- Tracking drivers without telling them.
How Apex does it

Part of this is built. The rest is not. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.
Apex is designed to assign vehicles to crews, remind about fleet maintenance and schedule trucks as resources. These are demo screens, and a dispatch map with technician locations is partly built.
