What is field service management (FSM)?
Short answerFSM stands for field service management. It sits between a CRM, which tracks customers and sales, and an ERP, which runs finance and inventory for a whole company. FSM focuses on scheduling, dispatching and recording on-site work for small and mid-sized service businesses.
The explanation
A CRM answers who your customers are and where each sale stands. An ERP answers what the company owns, owes and produces. FSM answers who is working on which job today, and what happened at the site. They overlap at the edges.
Small trades businesses rarely buy an ERP. Their needs cluster around FSM with a light customer record and invoicing built in. Larger companies often connect FSM to accounting and sometimes to a CRM, so that jobs and money tie back to the books.
When someone says FSM, check what they mean. In casual trades talk it means the all-in-one tool for jobs. In enterprise talk it can mean a module in a bigger suite. Clarify the scope before comparing quotes, because the two can differ in price and effort by an order of magnitude.
What to watch for
- Buying an enterprise module for a ten-person crew.
- Expecting an FSM tool to replace your accounting.

The screen and the rules are built and tested. Saving real customer data is not connected yet. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.
Apex includes a customer database, and works toward an accounting sync and a multi-technician board. The customer database is built, and the sync and board are built as screens that are not connected to saved data yet.
