What is service management software?
Short answerService management software has two common meanings. One is IT service management, which runs help-desk tickets and internal requests. The other is field service management for businesses that do work at customer sites. Trades businesses almost always want the second.
The explanation
IT service management tools track tickets, assets and requests inside a company. They are used by technology departments and have nothing to do with sending a technician to a house. Search results mix the two because the phrase is the same.
Field service management tools schedule jobs, dispatch crews and handle quotes and invoices. If you run plumbing, cleaning, lawn care, pest control or similar work, this is the category. Look for words like jobs, dispatch, technician, route and customer address.
A quick filter helps. If the product page talks about tickets, agents and service desk, it is IT. If it talks about work orders, crews, arrival windows and invoices, it is field. Some products serve both, but most are built for one, and it shows in the screens.
What to watch for
- Starting a trial of a help-desk product by mistake.
- Comparing prices across the two categories.
