Field service management: what it means
DefinitionField service management, often shortened to FSM, is the practice and software category for running work performed at customer locations rather than in a shop. It ties together scheduling, dispatch, estimates, job records, invoicing and follow-up, so the office and the people on the road work from the same information.
How it works in a service business
The word field means anywhere that is not your own building: a kitchen, a lawn, a roof, a pool. Field service management exists because the office and the truck keep losing information to each other. A tech arrives without the customer's gate code, or the office bills for a job that changed on site. Good FSM keeps one job record that both sides update. The tradeoff is weight. A heavy system built for large HVAC firms can bury a three-person crew in screens, while a light one may stop at the calendar. A common mistake is paying for dispatch maps, inventory and fleet tools you will never open. Match the tool to how many people you send out each day.
Example
A plumbing outfit with four vans uses a single job record per call. The office adds the gate code, the plumber adds photos and parts used, and the invoice is built from that same record.
