What is field service management?
Short answerField service management is the practice of coordinating people, jobs and parts for work done at customer sites. It covers taking requests, scheduling, dispatching, tracking the work and billing. A business can do it on paper, though software removes the hand-offs where details are lost.
The explanation
The discipline exists because the office and the work are in different places. Someone must decide who goes where and when, make sure they have what they need, hear back about what happened and bill for it. That coordination is the management.
Good practice has a few habits. Every job has an owner. Every customer promise is written where the crew can see it. Technicians report arrival and completion. Parts and photos are tied to the job. At the end of the day, you can say what was done and what is owed.
You can run it with a whiteboard and a phone for a very small crew. Trouble starts when volume or headcount grows, and the whiteboard goes out of date. The choice to use software is a choice about how many hand-offs you want to trust to memory.
What to watch for
- Letting promises live in someone's head.
- Counting a job done before it is invoiced.
How Apex does it

Part of this is built. The rest is not. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.
Apex works toward a multi-technician board, on-the-way, arrived and done taps and custom job statuses. The taps are built, the board is built as a screen and statuses are partly built.
