CRM: what it means
DefinitionA CRM, short for customer relationship management, is software that stores each customer's contact details, addresses, service history, notes and follow-up tasks in one place. For a service business it is the memory of the company, so any staff member can see the full story.
How it works in a service business
Without a CRM, knowledge lives in the owner's head and a pile of texts. With one, anyone answering the phone can see that the customer has a dog, prefers mornings and complained last spring. The tradeoff is data entry: a CRM is only as good as what goes in, and busy crews skip it. A common mistake is buying a heavy sales CRM built for corporate teams when a simple customer list with history and reminders would do. Look for the basics: multiple addresses per customer, notes the customer cannot see, tags, and a record of every job and message. Make sure you can export the list, since it is among your most valuable assets.
Example
A caller's number matches an existing record. The receptionist sees two past visits, a note to use the side gate, and a reminder that the customer is due for a spring service.
