Lead pipeline: what it means
DefinitionA lead pipeline is a set of stages that each prospect moves through, from first contact to quoted, followed up, won or lost. It shows the owner who is waiting on a quote, who needs a nudge, and how many inquiries turn into paying jobs.
How it works in a service business
Most lost work in service businesses is not a no, it is silence. A quote goes out, the owner gets busy and nobody follows up. A pipeline makes the waiting list visible. Typical stages are new, contacted, quoted, follow-up due, won and lost, with a reason for each loss. The tradeoff is upkeep: a pipeline nobody updates is worse than none. A common mistake is too many stages, which makes updating feel like homework. Keep four or five, set a follow-up date on every open item, and review the list weekly. Over time, the lost reasons show whether price, timing or response speed is costing you jobs.
Example
The owner opens the pipeline on Monday and sees three quotes older than five days. A quick call to each turns one into a booked fence job.
