I hate my contractor software, what else is there?
Short answerRemodeling software holds live projects, change orders and billing, so switch between projects and not in the middle of one. Export records for every open job, finish the small ones in the old tool, and start the new tool on the next project that begins.
The explanation
A remodel can run for months with change orders, selections, draws and a client portal attached. Moving a half-finished project loses that thread. The safest rule is that active projects stay where they are and new projects start in the new tool.
For records you must keep, such as signed contracts, change orders and payment history, export everything as PDF or CSV and store copies somewhere you control. Homeowners and insurers sometimes ask for documents years later.
Test the new tool on one small project first. Run it through estimate, contract, a change order and a payment draw. If something you depend on is awkward, you learn it on a kitchen refresh and not on a whole-house renovation. Save signed contracts and payment records as files you control before any account closes.
What to watch for
- Moving a live project half way through.
- Cancelling before you have saved signed documents.
In general contractor
Change orders and progress billing are where remodelers lose money when software is clumsy. Test both with a made-up change before you commit. All general contractor scheduling questions.
How Apex does it
In progress
Part of this is built. The rest is not. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.
Apex works toward change orders and progress billing, both partly built, and a CSV customer export at any time, also partly built. Large project management is not Apex's focus today.
