I hate my drywall software, what else is there?

Process: Switching and cancelling. Trade: Drywall contractor. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerFor a drywall business, the parts of old software worth saving are open bids, estimate templates and customer history. Export them, check whether the replacement handles square footage and staged work, and run one live job through it before switching the rest.

The explanation

Drywall estimates start with measurements: wall and ceiling area, number of sheets, finish level. Your estimate templates probably encode those rules. If you built them in the old tool, they will not carry over, so write down the formulas before you leave.

Export your customer list, open bids and signed jobs. Contractors you bid for repeatedly are the most valuable records, because they carry the history of what you charged and when. Keep a copy of that list in a spreadsheet that you control.

Pilot the new tool on one job from measurement to final invoice. Watch how it handles the stages of hanging, taping and finishing as separate visits. If staged scheduling is clumsy, you will notice within one job. Keep the old tool read-only for reference until the last open bid is closed.

What to watch for

  • Losing the formulas behind templates.
  • Moving general contractor accounts without their pricing history.

In drywall contractor

General contractors who send repeat work expect quick bids. A new tool that makes a bid slower to send costs you jobs, so time how long a standard bid takes. All drywall contractor scheduling questions.

How Apex does it

In progress

Part of this is built. The rest is not. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.

Apex works toward estimate templates by service, measurement takeoffs and customer import. Templates and takeoffs are built as screens, import is partly built, and none is connected to saved data yet.

  • ES15Estimate templates by service(Rolling out)
  • ES11Measurement takeoffs (sqft, linear ft)(Rolling out)
  • LD15Customer import from CSV/other software(In progress)

Apex Flow Scheduler is in early access. See how we label status.
