Why is QuickBooks Desktop so expensive?
Short answerI did not read QuickBooks Desktop pricing, so I cannot say why it costs what it does. [1] The online version I did read lists $38 to $340 a month, and a fair comparison needs the desktop price, its yearly renewal and any user add-ons on the same twelve-month basis. [1]
The explanation
Desktop and online products are priced differently. One is usually a license or a yearly subscription for software installed on a computer, and the other is a monthly plan for a service you open in a browser. To compare them, convert both to a yearly cost for the same number of users.
The yearly number should include everything you would actually add: extra users, payroll, payment processing, support and upgrades. Ask the vendor for those in writing and check the vendor's own page for current desktop prices, because I did not read them.
Then weigh convenience against cost. A desktop file lives on one machine, so a bookkeeper in another town cannot open it without extra steps. The online plans list accountant access as part of the package. [1] For a mobile service business that wants invoices created in the field, that can outweigh a lower license cost.
