How does a prepaid wallet work, and why does it stop at zero?

Apex prices come from one source file and match the pricing page. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerA prepaid wallet is a balance you fund first and spend down as texts and AI phone minutes are used. At zero it stops, so you cannot owe a surprise bill. Apex's wallet is rolling out, so until it arrives texts and AI stay off unless you connect your own provider account.

The explanation

The mechanics are simple. You add money in advance. The smallest top-up is $20. Each text or AI phone minute is deducted at its listed price: $0.025 per text sent, $0.012 per text received, $0.10 per picture message and $0.25 per AI phone minute. When the balance reaches zero, metered features pause until you add funds. Those prices belong to the wallet, which is rolling out.

Compare that with billing after the fact. A busy week, a spam wave or a misconfigured message can run a postpaid usage bill far past what you expected, and you find out at month end. A hard stop turns the worst case into a known number: the amount you chose to fund. You set the ceiling, and the system cannot go past it.

The tradeoff is real. If you forget to refill, reminders stop going out and an AI phone answer could pause. Keep a cushion above your normal monthly usage, check the balance weekly in busy season, and use any usage alert the tool offers before the balance gets low. If you would rather not manage a balance at all, run texts and AI on your own provider account, where the provider's own billing rules apply.

How Apex does it

In progress

Part of this is built. The rest is not. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.

Apex meters phone usage with caps, and usage alerts before an overage are partly built. The design is a wallet funded before use, with a hard stop at zero instead of a bill that arrives afterward.

More questions

Can the wallet go negative?

No. The design is a hard stop at zero. Usage is paid from funded balance and never billed after the fact, so the most you can spend is the amount you chose to add.

What is the smallest top-up?

The minimum top-up is $20, and you can add more at once if you prefer a larger cushion. The wallet is rolling out, so check the current top-up screen before planning around that number.

What if the balance runs out in the middle of a busy day?

Metered features pause until you add funds. Add up your normal monthly texts, keep a cushion above it, and refill before busy weeks. Connecting your own provider account takes the wallet out of the picture.
