How to estimate mowing lawns?

Process: Quotes and estimates. Trade: Lawn care. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerEstimate mowing from the mowable area, the obstacles and trim and edge time, plus how close the stop sits to the rest of your route. Time a few lawns, find your rate per hour, and set a minimum stop charge. Dense routes with short drives make the same price more profitable.

The explanation

Measure the mowable area, not the whole lot. Subtract the house, driveway, beds and any area you will not mow. Satellite views and a measuring tool give a good first number. Then check slope, gates, fences and obstacles like play sets, which slow the mower.

Add trim and edging time, plus blowing off walks. A small yard with lots of edging can take as long as a larger open one. Time ten real stops, divide by area, and you will have your own speed figures to replace a rule of thumb.

Route fit matters as much as lot size. A stop that adds a long drive costs more than one on your existing street. Set a minimum stop charge to cover the trip, price by frequency (weekly stops run faster than every other week when grass grows long), and review each season.

Steps

  1. Measure the mowable area from a map view.
  2. Note slope, gates, fences and obstacles.
  3. Add trim, edge and blow-off time.
  4. Time ten real stops to find your own pace.
  5. Set a minimum charge and adjust for route fit.

What to watch for

  • Pricing by lot size when the lawn is only part of it.
  • Taking far-off stops at the same rate.

In lawn care

Lawn care is built on recurring weekly routes in a growing season. A single stop that breaks route density can cost more in drive time than the mowing earns. All lawn care scheduling questions.

How Apex does it

In progress

Part of this is built. The rest is not. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.

Apex is designed to look up property data such as lot size, import aerial measurements and order the route daily. Property lookup is partly built, aerial import is a demo screen and route density offers are built.

  • IP17Property data (lot size, sq ft) lookup(In progress)
  • ES12Aerial / satellite measurement import(Rolling out)
  • SC05Route optimization (daily)(Built)
  • SC06Route density / best-fit window offers(Built, rolling out)

Apex Flow Scheduler is in early access. See how we label status.
