How to estimate landscaping jobs?
Short answerEstimate landscaping by listing every task, measuring each area, pricing materials and delivery, estimating labor hours and equipment time, then adding overhead and a margin. Break the job into phases so a change to one part, such as a patio, does not force a redo of the entire price.
The explanation
Start with the plan. Walk the site and list tasks: removal, grading, planting, edging, mulch, hardscape, irrigation tie-ins. Measure each area in the units you buy, such as cubic yards of mulch or square feet of sod. Photos and a sketch keep the scope visible.
Price in three buckets: materials with delivery, labor hours at your loaded rate, and equipment time. Add a line for disposal of spoils and a contingency for surprises like roots or poor drainage. Then add overhead and your margin.
Present by phase so the customer can pick and choose. Add optional upgrades, such as a better plant selection. State the planting season and warranty terms, and explain that weather can move dates. After the job, record actual hours so your next estimate is more accurate.
Steps
- Walk the site and list every task.
- Measure each area in the units you buy.
- Price materials, labor hours and equipment separately.
- Add disposal, contingency, overhead and margin.
- Present the bid in phases with optional upgrades.
What to watch for
- Ignoring slope, drainage and access for equipment.
- One lump price that hides phases.
In lawn care
Landscaping jobs run in spring and fall peaks and depend on weather. Phase pricing helps when rain moves a start date and the customer wants to reorder the work. All lawn care scheduling questions.
