What features should free dog grooming software have?

Process: Booking and scheduling. Trade: Dog groomer. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerFive features matter in grooming software: a pet profile with vaccine dates, appointment length that varies by dog, text reminders, deposits for new clients and a rebooking prompt. A free tool that lacks two or more of them will cost you in no-shows and retyping.

The explanation

The pet profile is the base. Breed, coat, weight, temperament and vaccine expiry should be fields you can see on the appointment screen, not buried in notes. Length by dog matters next: a poodle in full coat takes longer than a short-haired terrier, and the calendar must block the right time.

Reminders and deposits protect revenue. A text the day before cuts forgotten visits, and a deposit from first-time clients cuts the rest. If the free plan has neither, consider that a missed two-hour slot costs more than most monthly plans.

Rebooking is the quiet one. Most dogs return every four to eight weeks, and the best moment to book the next visit is at pickup. A tool that suggests the next date and sends a nudge when a client lapses turns one-time visits into a standing schedule.

Steps

Open a pet profile and check for vaccine and coat fields.
Book a long-coat dog and see that the slot is longer.
Send a reminder to your own phone.
Look for a deposit option and a rebooking prompt.

What to watch for

Fixed-length appointments that ignore coat and size.
No way to see vaccine status on the appointment screen.

How Apex does it

In progress

Part of this is built. The rest is not. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.

Apex lists a service menu with durations and prices and a rebooking reminder for lapsed customers, each with its own status badge. Pet-specific fields would be custom fields on the customer or job. A 14-day free trial needs no card.
