How do I cancel my service with a home service company?

Process: Cancellations and no-shows. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerFind the company's cancellation policy, give notice as early as you can, cancel in writing, and ask for a reply that confirms the date and any fee. Most small service companies charge only when notice is short, so an early message usually costs nothing and protects both sides from a misunderstanding.

The explanation

Small service businesses sell time. A crew held for your visit cannot be sent anywhere else if you cancel an hour before. That is why many have a notice rule, often described in the booking confirmation or on the invoice. Reading it first tells you whether you are inside or outside the free window.

Cancel in the channel that leaves a record: a reply to the confirmation email, a text, or the cancel link in the booking message. A phone call works, but follow it with one line in writing, such as the date, the time, and the words cancelled by me on that date.

If you only want a different day, say reschedule instead. Many owners will waive a fee for a reschedule that keeps the work, because the crew slot can be refilled and you stay a customer.

What to watch for

  • Cancelling only to a crew member in person, since the office may never hear about it.
  • Waiting until the arrival window starts. At that point most policies treat it as a late cancel or no-show.

How Apex does it

Built, rolling out

Built. A real server path exists; only setup steps remain before customers can use it. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.

Apex is designed to put a reschedule and cancel option in the customer's confirmation, so the change reaches the owner's schedule directly instead of living in a voicemail.
