Lead time: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: Booking and scheduling.

DefinitionLead time is the minimum amount of notice a business requires between a customer's booking request and the visit itself, for example one full day. It stops last-minute requests from landing on a crew that has no room or no time to prepare.

How it works in a service business

A booking page without lead time will happily accept a request for an hour from now. For some work that is fine, such as an emergency repair. For others it creates chaos: a deep clean needs supplies, a route needs planning, and a quote needs a site look. Lead time can be set per service, so emergencies can be same day while installations need a week. The tradeoff is lost spontaneous business. A common mistake is a single global lead time for all services. Match it to the real preparation each needs, add blackout dates for holidays and vacations, and review it when demand shifts. Customers appreciate seeing the rule on the page so the earliest date is no surprise.

Example

A carpet cleaning booking page shows the earliest date as two days out, while the emergency water extraction service accepts same-day requests that ring the owner directly.
