What is route optimization?

Process: Dispatch and routing. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerRoute optimization is ordering a day's stops so total driving is as short as possible while fixed appointment times and crew limits still hold. The result is a stop sequence, not a promise of savings, because a good order depends on honest travel times and job lengths.

The explanation

Picture a crew with six stops. The number of possible orders is large, and the shortest one is rarely the one you would draw by hand. Route optimization software takes the addresses, estimates drive time between each pair, and searches for a sequence that keeps the total low.

Real days have constraints. Some customers need an arrival window, some jobs must start at an exact time, and some crews start from home and not from the shop. A useful optimizer treats those as rules and fits the rest around them. One that ignores them produces a short route you cannot actually run.

The output is only as good as the inputs. If a lawn visit really takes forty minutes and you entered twenty, the order will look fine and the afternoon will fall apart. Check job durations first, then judge the route.

What to watch for

  • Trusting an order built on guessed job lengths.
  • Optimizing stops that are already locked to fixed times.

How Apex does it

Built

Built and working against the real database for our first business only. Early access. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.

Apex includes a daily route optimization and shows drive time between jobs. It treats the day's stops as a list to reorder, and the owner decides whether to accept the new order.

  • SC28Drive-time between jobs shown(Built)

Apex Flow Scheduler is in early access. See how we label status.
