What is a field service engineer?

Process: Dispatch and routing. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerA field service engineer is a technician who installs, maintains and repairs equipment at customer sites, often complex or technical machines. The title is common in industrial, medical and IT equipment, while trades like plumbing usually say technician. The work is scheduled by site, not by shop.

The explanation

The word engineer signals technical depth, not necessarily a degree. These people diagnose faults, replace parts, calibrate equipment and document what they did. They often carry specialized tools and parts, and they travel to the customer.

Scheduling them is harder than scheduling a generalist. The job needs a person with the right skill and the right parts, in the right place, at a time the customer's site allows. A wrong match means a wasted trip, so skills and parts need to be visible when you assign the call.

For a small service company, the same logic applies to any specialist. Record who can do what, keep common parts on the vehicle, and write clear job notes after each visit. Repeat customers value knowing the same person understands their equipment.

What to watch for

  • Dispatching a call without checking skills.
  • Sending someone without the likely parts.

How Apex does it

Part of this is built. The rest is not. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.

Apex works toward skills-based routing of requests, auto-assign to the best technician and a preferred technician per customer. The assignment feature is built as a screen, and the other two are partly built.
