How to quote drywall work to a customer?

Process: Quotes and estimates. Trade: Drywall contractor. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerA drywall quote should state the rooms, the finish level, the stages of work, what is included such as texture matching, primer or cleanup, and what triggers a change order. Give a start window and an approval step. Clear exclusions prevent the common fight over who paints and who patches.

The explanation

Customers do not read price lines the way a contractor does. Put a plain summary at the top: which rooms, hang and finish, and the finish level you will deliver. Finish level matters because a surface ready for paint is different from one ready for gloss or thin light.

Then the details: stages and the number of visits, what is included such as texture, primer and haul-away of scrap, and what is not. If the customer must move furniture or clear rooms, say so. State the price, the deposit and when the balance is due.

Add the change rule. If hidden damage, extra repairs or design changes appear, say how you will price them and that you will get approval first. A quote that covers this up front keeps the job calm. Send it with photos of the areas so both sides see the same thing.

Steps

  1. Open with rooms, work and the finish level in plain words.
  2. List stages, visit count and the start window.
  3. State what is included, such as texture, primer and cleanup.
  4. List exclusions like painting and repairs to hidden damage.
  5. Explain the change order rule and how to approve.

What to watch for

  • Leaving the finish level undefined.
  • Silence on who paints after the work.

In drywall contractor

Drywall customers often confuse finishing with painting. The quote has to say where your work ends, since the customer may expect a wall that is ready to live with. All drywall contractor scheduling questions.
