How to price a drywall job?
Short answerPrice a drywall job by counting sheets, hanging time, tape and mud coats, sanding and cleanup, then adding material cost, dry-time scheduling, travel and your margin. Quote per square foot or per sheet only after you have timed your own work, and keep a minimum for small repairs.
The explanation
Start from a take-off. Measure each room, subtract large openings, convert to sheets and add a waste allowance. Note ceiling height, because lifts or scaffolds add time. Then choose the finish level the customer wants, since smooth paint-ready walls need more coats and sanding than a garage.
Time is the biggest cost and it is not only labor hours. Mud must dry between coats, so a room can occupy three or four separate days even when the work totals one. Price that scheduling reality in, or you lose money on return trips.
Convert your time and materials into a rate you can repeat, such as per sheet or per square foot, but test it against a time log from past jobs. Add a minimum charge for small jobs and a clear line for texture matching and paint prep, which many customers assume are included.
In drywall contractor
Drywall finishing is a multi-visit job. Plan the coats on a calendar with dry time between visits and tell the customer when the dust and sanding days will be. All drywall contractor scheduling questions.
