How to fix crashing apps?
Short answerFix crashing apps on a work phone by checking the three usual causes: low storage, an outdated app or operating system, and too many apps competing for memory. Free some space, update everything, restart the phone, and close unused apps. If one app still crashes after that, reinstall it only after confirming your data lives on the server.
The explanation
Crashes cluster on phones that are nearly full. When storage drops under a gigabyte or two, apps struggle to save temporary files. Delete old photos and videos, or back them up elsewhere, and clear the app cache in settings.
Out-of-date software causes the next biggest group. An app updated last week may expect a newer system version than your phone has. Update the operating system, then the app, then restart the phone, which clears memory that has been held for weeks.
If one app still crashes, note when: on launch, when opening one screen, or when uploading photos. Different timing means different causes. Then reinstall, but only after you know your data is stored online, so you do not lose unsent work. Write down which app and which screen failed before you reinstall, in case it returns.
Steps
- Check free storage and clear space if the phone is nearly full.
- Update the operating system and then the app.
- Restart the phone and close apps you do not need.
- Note exactly when the crash happens: launch, one screen, or upload.
- Reinstall only after confirming your data is saved on the server.
What to watch for
- Reinstalling an app that stores unsent work only on the phone.
- Using a phone with a year of unrestarted uptime as a field device.
How Apex does it
Built
Built and working against the real database for our first business only. Early access. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.
Apex installs to the home screen as a web app by scanning a QR code, with no app store step. It runs in the phone's browser engine, so keeping the phone updated matters, and there is no native app to reinstall.
