How to cancel a business contract?

Process: Switching and cancelling. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerTo cancel a business contract, find the termination clause, follow its notice period and delivery method exactly, send the notice in writing, keep proof of delivery, and settle anything still owed. Rules vary by contract and state, so for large or disputed contracts consult a lawyer. This is practical guidance, not legal advice.

The explanation

Start with the contract itself. Look for sections titled term, termination, renewal and notice. Many contracts auto-renew unless you give notice a set number of days before the renewal date, so the date matters as much as the wording.

Send notice the way the contract says: email to a named address, tracked mail, or a form in an account. Keep a copy, the date and any delivery receipt. If the contract is silent, use written notice that leaves a record, and ask for a written confirmation.

Settle what is owed. There may be fees for early exit, unpaid invoices or equipment to return. Ask for a final statement, and request that the other side confirm in writing that the contract has ended. If they push back, keep your records organized and escalate to a lawyer.

Steps

  1. Find the termination, renewal and notice sections.
  2. Note the notice deadline and the required delivery method.
  3. Send written notice that way and keep proof.
  4. Ask for a final statement and written confirmation of termination.

What to watch for

  • Missing the auto-renewal notice date by a few days.
  • Cancelling only by phone with nothing in writing.

How Apex does it

Rolling out

The screen and the rules are built and tested. Saving real customer data is not connected yet. Status as of 2026-10-07; the badge shows the least-built feature involved.

Apex has service agreements that are sold and renewed, auto-renew with a price escalator, and a document library per customer. All three are rolling out, and none replaces advice from a lawyer on your specific contract.
