How to price mobile mechanic jobs?

Process: Quotes and estimates. Trade: Auto repair shop. Reviewed 2026-10-07.

Short answerPrice a mobile mechanic job from four lines: a trip or diagnostic charge, labor for the repair, parts with a margin, and a margin on the whole to cover your van, tools and downtime. Quote labor from the repair time you have measured, not a guess, and state the warranty on parts and work.

The explanation

The trip charge pays for the drive and setup before any wrench turns. Many mobile mechanics fold a diagnostic into it and credit it to the repair if the customer approves. Tell the customer on the phone, so the number is not a surprise.

Labor should come from a time source you trust, such as a published guide or your own log of past jobs, times your hourly rate. Your rate needs to carry the van, insurance, tools and the hours you spend driving and quoting.

Parts need a margin because you source, carry risk and handle returns. State whether the customer may supply parts, and whether the warranty changes if they do. Write the total, the approval, and the payment method on one page before you start work.

In auto repair shop

A mobile repair depends on parking, weather and access to the car. Ask for the vehicle location, engine and symptoms at the request, and confirm the time before you drive. All auto repair shop scheduling questions.
