Service area: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: Lead capture.

DefinitionA service area is the set of locations a business agrees to work in, defined by zip codes, cities, neighborhoods or a radius from a base. Checking the address against it before booking prevents the crew from receiving jobs that are too far to serve profitably.

How it works in a service business

Every mile of driving is unpaid, so a tight service area protects margin. Defining it also helps the online booking page decline or flag addresses outside the zone before anyone wastes time. The tradeoff is growth: a wide area captures more demand but stretches routes thin. Some owners use zones, serving each on specific days so a crew works one region at a time. A common mistake is defining the area by radius alone, which includes places across a river or a toll road that are far in drive time. Review the boundary when you add crews, and consider a surcharge for fringe addresses instead of a hard no.

Example

A pest control company accepts online requests for eight zip codes, and routes addresses just outside them to a short form so the owner can decide whether to add a travel charge.
