Prepaid wallet: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: Software pricing and choosing.

DefinitionA prepaid wallet is a balance a customer loads in advance, then draws down as they use metered services such as text messages or phone minutes. When the balance runs out the service stops or pauses, which caps spending but needs occasional top-ups.

How it works in a service business

Wallets suit owners who want a ceiling on cost and no surprise bill at month end. The tradeoff is attention: a drained wallet at a bad moment can mean reminders that do not send or calls that go unanswered. A common mistake is adding a small amount once and forgetting it. Look for low-balance alerts, an optional automatic top-up, and a clear usage log showing what each charge was for. Compare this with connecting your own provider account, where billing happens at the provider. Check how the software describes refunds of unused balance and minimum top-up amounts before you load money. Treat any wallet feature described as rolling out as not yet something to depend on.

Example

An owner loads a modest wallet balance. A low-balance alert arrives after a busy week of reminders, so she tops it up before the weekend rush.
