Bring your own AI: what it means
DefinitionBring your own AI, often shortened to BYO, means a business connects its own account with an AI or phone provider to a software product, so the usage is billed by that provider directly. The software supplies the workflow, and the owner controls the account and the keys.
How it works in a service business
The appeal is transparency: you see the provider's own usage and rates, and you can switch providers without leaving the software. The tradeoff is setup and responsibility. You create the provider account, add a payment method, and keep the credentials safe. A common mistake is pasting a secret key into a shared document or giving it to an employee who leaves. Treat keys like passwords, set spending limits at the provider, and remove access when staff change. If you would rather not manage another account, a prepaid wallet inside the software may be an alternative where offered. Either way, ask what happens to calls or texts if your provider balance runs out.
Example
An owner creates her own account with a voice provider, sets a monthly spending limit there, and connects it to her scheduler so phone answering runs on her own usage.
