Audit log: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: App reliability and support.

DefinitionAn audit log is a time-stamped record of actions taken inside business software, such as who edited a price, deleted a customer or changed a job, and when. It lets an owner trace mistakes and settle disputes with facts instead of memory.

How it works in a service business

When a customer says a quote was a different amount, or a job disappears from the calendar, the audit log shows the history. It is useful for catching honest errors, spotting patterns in who makes them, and discouraging misuse. The tradeoff is noise: a log that records every click can be too long to read, so filtering by user, date or record matters. A common mistake is assuming a log exists and never checking it until there is a problem. Look at what the product records, how long it keeps entries, and whether owners can export them. Pair the log with individual logins, because a shared account makes every entry look the same and tells you nothing.

Example

A customer disputes a price. The owner opens the job history and sees that the office manager changed the total at two in the afternoon, then asks her about the discount.
