Payment link: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: Invoicing and payments.

DefinitionA payment link is a web address, sent by text or email, that opens a page where the customer can pay a specific invoice by card or bank transfer. It lets a customer pay in seconds from a phone without calling the office or writing a check.

How it works in a service business

Links shorten the gap between finishing a job and getting paid. The tech sends the invoice, the customer taps, and the payment lands without the office handling card numbers. The tradeoff is dependence on the customer's attention: a link buried in an old text can sit unpaid for weeks. A common mistake is sending the link once and never following up. Pair it with an automatic reminder, and make sure the page shows the invoice details so the customer recognizes the charge. Card data should be handled by the payment processor's own page rather than typed into your system. Check that the link works on a phone, since most customers will open it there.

Example

The groomer finishes a bath and texts the customer a link. The customer pays from the parking lot, and the invoice flips to paid before the dog is in the car.
