Missed-call text-back: what it means

Glossary term. Reviewed 2026-10-07. Process: Phone and AI answering.

DefinitionMissed-call text-back is a feature that sends an automatic text message to a caller whose call went unanswered, usually offering a booking link or saying when someone will call back. It tries to keep the lead from calling a competitor while you are on a job.

How it works in a service business

Service owners often cannot answer while under a sink or up a ladder, and a caller who hits voicemail frequently moves on. A quick text can catch them: sorry we missed you, here is a link to request a time. The tradeoff is tone and timing. A generic message sent at midnight to a long-time customer can feel clumsy. A common mistake is setting it up without checking the number can send texts, since business texting needs a connected account and carrier registration first. Make the message short, include your business name, offer one action, and route replies to a person. Exclude your own crew's numbers so staff do not get texted.

Example

A caller reaches voicemail while the plumber is under a house. Within a minute she receives a text with the business name and a link to request an appointment.
